Lasering ready roll icing
Hi all
Just an odd bit of information. Our food tech department at school asked us recently if we could cut and engrave icing for cakes. What a question!! We tried it and it worked, different powers even gave different shades of gold/yellow. So we can now etch or cut out Happy Birthday or whatever on cakes for the staff. Food tech also now want us to cut out shapes for the kids to put on the fairy cakes they make as a finishing touch.
Anyone else tried cutting food?
Phil

Brilliant Idea Phil, you will have to post some pictures of those staff cakes.
I did try egg shells but it needs a rotary. Unfortunately they cannot be cut right through without burning the surface.
Tweakie.

Eggselent
(someone had to say it!)
I read a blog a while ago where a guy engraved a bowl of suger - it was enough to melt it into a sort of shape! I would be careful with fine powdered foodstuffs though as it can be explosive when airbourne which the air assist could do.
Cheers

Re: Lasering ready roll icing
The first thing i did with the laser was chop up mars bars, and then i engraved pictures onto bread, then toasted bread at one setting in stripes and added a picture as well, ive put pictures onto pies to say whats in them, i wondered about icing but havent tried it
This weekend I was watching the craft cutters on one of the shopping chanels on sunday, they were cutting all sorts, they said it was with a laser but im not sure ive only seen ones with blades listed on the net ,they had a special waterproof cutter for icing, its not a decent size though, its just a tiny thing with a moving base not the laser , the cost is very high for what they are, the HPC ones would have a big market for this with cake decorating
We sell some bits of plastic mouldings to a cake decorating company , they get sheet icing laser cut for them ( not by us though )

Of course, don't forget ot never mix edible materials with non edible ones. As you know, the dust, smoke, and residues get EVERYWHERE!
I always wondered if you could cook bacon with hair straighteners . . . . hmmm

LOL - I did warn you
Have you seen the Mythbusters on TV do an experiment with milk powder? Seriously dangerous!
Like the bike - how fragile is it?

Hi Dave,
The bike lasted a while and it could be picked up etc. but it was hygroscopic and eventually went soft.
