Is there really nothing better than Lasercut?
1. It crashes...often.
2. I have to close it, connect to the laser, then re-open or it won't communicate.
3. No way of getting multiple lines of text, other than separate text boxes.

you will need it to connect and send the file to make the cut,
but your can design in any program you like,
then just export the file, and import it into lasercut

Nope, not without changing the board and controller.
I design in a mix of corel and cad and just use lasercut to import the dxf.

I don't have much trouble with lasercut
I have a win 8 that use to be a pain with a communicate thing but it was the usb ports going to sleep
Some files can have lots of broken lines /nodes ect then i sort out in another software
