Is my Lasercut 5.3 Haunted?!

Post by richardofswansea »

I've had a LS 6040 since July, which I'm using with Coreldraw X4, Lasercut 5.3 running on Windows XP.

I'm finding the software a bit temperamental. Sometimes I get a 'Softdog no same' error or a failure of the PC to connect to the machine, I try a few reboots and unplugging / replugging, rub it with a rabbit's paw and it behaves itself for a few weeks. Is this typical of other people's experience?

Today's problems are different. Problem 1 - I've often used Coredraw files which include vector lines (some to cut, some to engrave) and a bitmap. When I click the 'Laser output' icon in Coreldraw the Lasercut software automatically outlines the bitmap in a magenta rectangle. With some files it engraves the bitmap correctly with no problem, in other very similar files it fills the area of the magenta rectangle as a solid block with the image in reverse.

By trial and error I've found that the order of the objects in Coreldraw can make a difference, but I've not been able to work out the rules.

Problem 2 - I work on a design and get it to a stage where it cuts and engraves correctly, save it and move onto something else. When I return to it later I find the settings in Lasercut have changed; the order of the colours, things that should be cut are set to engrave and vice versa, power and speed settings have changed. It seems that sometimes the design is picking up settings from other things I've been working on, even though I've not opened any of the files.

Am I the only one who gets this? Anyone have any idea how to avoid them? Do I need a Ghostbuster?

I do know that if you save a file in Lasercut, then change it, download to the machine, it autosaves the changes. It is incredibly annoying, and I have lost bits of work due to that.

I never turn the Laser PC off, so do not have any errors like you describe. I would be tempted to say it could be a USB driver issue.

Some good news on this one. I saved the Coreldraw file that was causing problems in a new directory, clicked 'Laser Output' and it worked perfectly.

If there's a ghost that suggests it must be hiding in the various files that get created automatically alongside the Coreldraw file. However, when I go back to the original Coreldraw file in its original directory and delete the other files, it still misbehaves. The mystery continues, but it's nice to have found another work-around.

.. and those files where the laser settings changed by themselves have stayed put for a few days!
