Which machine???
Which machine???
I'm going to buy a laser engraver in the new year... I have trawled the net... I'm looking to spend around a £1000 ish... I have looked at the 3020 and would like to know a little more about it... Do any of you own one?... I am looking into cutting stencils from acitate for my artwork among other applications... Any help would be greatly appreciated... Many thanks!
Re: Which machine???
Hiya,
The 3020 would be an excellent choice for stencils, Acetates can be cut cleanly at very high speeds with a laser machine
another good material is OilBoard for stencils and is cheaper than acetate for small runs of spray jobs.
best wishes
Dave
ps: Somebody who owns a 3020 I'm sure will be along soon to answer any speciffic questions

Re: Which machine???
Hi,
I have a 3020 - bought it from HPC in October, no regrets at all.
What I would say is NewlyDraw that drives it is quite basic and control of the power is done via the potentiometer on the machine with a rather basic amp meter to show the setting. Not a major problem but means you spend a bit more time getting the power settings right for each job.
Hope this helps

Re: Which machine???
Thanks again...
Is newly draw software the only operating software you can use with the 3020?
Does the machine come set up for operation or do you have to set the laser alignment yourself?
thanks for your time...

Re: Which machine???
Hi,
Yes the 3020 has a board that is controlled by ND - as far as I know only ND will work with it. There are upgarde boards available from USA but at a cost!
ND works OK on an XP PC - not saying it won't work with other Windows but you may have to fiddle about with compatability options to get it to work.
My 3020 came out of the box, and once rigged up to the compressor (supplied) and the water pump (supplied) and after taking off the packing clamp it was up and running. Chris tests and sets it up before being sent out.
I would also mention the weight and size of the machine - it is quite a lump so you will need two of you to lift it and a sturdy table to put it on. You also need a 30lt tank to store the DI water in - I use a storage container from B&Q that cost less than a tenner.
Hope this helps

Re: Which machine???
Great info Dave... thanks... glad i found this forum...
Is it a noisy beast too?
I have read the tubes last up to 1500 hours??? Are they hard to replace.
Does the newly draw come with a tutorial or is it a feel your way round it job? ( I am computer savvy )
Cheers Dave!...

Re: Which machine???
Noise Levels: Very low, circa a quiet hairdryer sort of levels.
Replacing tubes: 10 minutes at most with another maybe 25mins to realign the mirrors
NewlyDraw: Dave N will be better to help you with that one
(My 6840 came with LaserCUT 5.3)
best wishes

Re: Which machine???
The laser is very quiet - no worse than a printer. The air compressor is the loudest part - I have put some thick felt under mine and that helps a lot. Even so it is not annoyingly loud.
Sadly ND comes with a manual that is very basic but is quite easy to use.
Regards
Dave
