Home use LS3060

Post by beefeater »

Hi
I am planning on buying the LS3060 to use in my hobby/business at home in the UK. Do I need any permissions from any governmental authorities?
Please can anyone help.

Hiya Paul,

The only individual in a position of authority and power you would usually need to notify is "The Wife" :) Trust me, when a 15foot long laser cutter that would look at home on the star ship enterprise turns up in January the wife is the one I'm going to be most concerned about (Chris can vouch for the look on Karens face when he delivered the last one;))

Joking aside no, there are no agencies you need to tell past those you would normally if running a business from home. Lasers have no special requirements for safety other than those defined in the factories acts for all forms of machinery. The only type of laser that requires licencing from the government is any laser of a class defined as "weapons grade" but seeing as those are all in the several billion pounds price bracket it's not usually much of a problem.

The 3060 is a good choice, enough power to cover your bases and sufficient bed size to make that larger job go a little easier. Quite a few of the guys here have them and are very pleased.

Hope that helps

Best wishes

Dave

Thanks Dave
My wife wanted an extension the size on the back garden, so I might have to give in.......Although I have a plan A first. We have a big dog so it will fit right where the dog's bed is. What do you think?
The dog sleeps mostly on my bed anyway.
Thanks for the serious info. Having read the articles here about upsetting neighbours I think that the filter is the order of the day too.
Regards
Paul

Hiya Paul,

Filters can be good, a lot depends on what you intend cutting and how close the neighbours are. Acrylic can give off quite foul fumes (not particularly dangerous just ugly smelling) so if you plan on doing a fair bit of acrylic work and you have neighbours close by a filter is probably a good idea. Wood fumes don't smell bad but when it looks like your having a bonfire every day the neighbours might object. (Ask Daven, about fumes ;), it will sure make you giggle :))

I have a nice ready supply of free "Wife pleaser plans" on hand if you ever need a "get me out of the S*** fast" job :) it's supprising what you can get away with if you cut out a nice Christmas table decoration before she finds what your doing.

best wishes

Dave

ps: If Mrs Beefeater is reading this, it was all Pauls idea...honestly :)

Fumes - don't talk to me about fumes - got another "that thing is going in a barn when we move" tonight!! Tip don't cut any material that has a large percent of wool in it unless you have a filter  :D

bwhahahhahaha unlucky dude :)

Kaz is gonna go postal when she sees the 25 :) I've made sure she only looks at 300 x 300 pixel gif's of it at the minute, that way her perception of it's real size should be off just long enough for me to get the thing installed :)

best wishes

Dave steak is good for black eyes :-)

Another tip - a vacuum cleaner is good for temporary smoke extraction from the cutter. However there are a few drawbacks:-
1. It's noisy
2. The house still smells
3. The house smells again when you next use the vacuum
4. It clogs the vacuums filter so when SWMBO uses it you get another clip round the ear! :|

:D
