I use an old PC and Windows XP to run my laser, but have just upgraded my main office machine to Windows 10. I run LaserCut 5.3 on that for design work, but the laser is not connected. So far I'm struggling to see what advantage I get from Windows 10, but at least it appears stable. It does behave differently from Windows 7 in default file access permissions - it seems to treat me more as a 'User' than an 'Administrator' despite my account being an 'Administrator' account. That meant that initially Laser Cut was unable to find the softdog key and wouldn't start; It's necessary to right click on the desktop shortcut for Laser cut and under Properties/Security tick the 'run as administrator' box. Then all is good.

The upgrade didn't need to replace any of my Windows 7 drivers for other hardware with new Windows 10 versions, so I'm fairly confident running the laser would not be a problem.

Thanks for the response Stephen. It sounds promising...

I may hold off on the free upgrade for a few more weeks.... just to be safe. I am currently using Windows 8.1 on my laser laptop, which I hate with a passion, so I am looking forward to using windows with a start button again....

I am going to be hanging on to my windows 7 machines as long as possible (desktops)... they are rock steady, and I see no advantage to making that upgrade at this time.

Regards
Tim

Hi,

After checking on here first, it seemed ok to upgrade to windows 10 which I have duly done,

then I went to updating the drivers off the installation disk as posted by HPC on here, the desktop seemed to totally loose the softdog all together, despite updating so I moved it to a different usb slot which then triggered the PC to sort it out, lasercut 5.3 could then be loaded, had a couple of strange effects it would download the file to the machine but nothing was there other than the perimeter of the object on the test feature, so I downloaded the cfg file and after restarting the laser it seemed to work and I have been cutting and engraving so as long as you can blindly update and mess with things it should work for you

I'm sure there are more technical souls who could do this with their eyes shut but in my case ignorance can be bliss :)

Kind regards David

Is there an alternative to ignorance? ;)
