Going on a little more with this thread, is it better to run the laser as cool as possible or is it better to run at a set temperature? Does the laser have less power when it's cold or when it's hot?

For my two penn'orth ... !
I live in an area where the water is quite soft! Never had problems with furry kettles or such, and I use good ol' tap water!
I never even considered using distilled water - I've not seen it in any manual - but if I had a problem I would look at putting maybe clear vinegar in the water (slightly acidic to offset the alkaline) - if possible check the ph of the water!
Pure water should be 7ph - any lower is acidic, any higher is alkaline - i believe that the ph value for "normal" tap water is somewhere between 6.5 and 8.5!
Maybe someone has access to a ph meter of litmus papers? From a school perhaps?
I would welcome comments from more qualified people - but it's all worked fine for me so far.
Water has been in my system for over 4 months - I check the tube visually (with a good torch) on a weekly basis - and the water is in a slim vertical tub which i check every time I run!
I keep the return pipe just abouve the water level, which means that the tube drains when I turn the pumps off - hence no chance of frost damage - not that it gets that cold - and I can hear the water running into the tank so i know it's circulating!
Sort of therapuitic - but makes me need the loo more often!

Gee, thanks Dave!
My self-denial was holding up until that comment!

Is it ok do use De ionised water if youve previosely used distilled or vice versa ?.
To cut a long story short, I want to top up my tank but I'm unable to get hold of my regular supply of distiled till next week. The only water I can get hold of localy is de-ionised.
Any advice would be much apreciated.
Peter

Its fine to mix them. I use purified water from the chemists for water cooling PCs. Its the same stuff.

Ive always used tap water, never had a problem , i have loads of distilled water at work we use it in the cyanoacrylate manufacture to wash the polymer ,but i have never put it in the laser, when chris delivered the laser i put the water in and got it from the tap, ive been runing the same laser for about 4 years and its still fine, i just refill every week or so

I dont suppose Cheshire is a soft water area is it by any chance?,
We have hard water in the Chilterns and the HPC 1290 tube got wrecked after just 8 months from using the tap water, not good !.

You soft water areas don't know how lucky you are - we get lime scale building up in the garden pond!!

Hmmm....... it might be soft water?, ive got the laser in Liverpool at the minute , the water in Runcorn goes stinky with slime in a few days! the Liverpool water doesnt its fine, Ive only used it since christmas on the liverpool water so it will probably blow up now ive said its fine. to stop the slime forming with the stinky runcorn water i popped a bit of isopropanol in the water as it kills germs before the slime forms
We do get a quite a bit of limescale in the kettle, my citrus plants are ok with the water though and they dont like hard water , id never realy thought about it......i just used tap water!
Im taking the laser over to Bulgaria sometime during the summer either that or im getting another bigger one for over there , i will be using distilled water as there is all sorts of rubbish in the water! , groundwater has far higher levels of uranium and the like.... so it will probably cause strange results
