Laser Cut and Engrave Lino ???

Post by theengravedtouch »

Just had a enquiry come in to produce linocuts and engrave on lino, now i am not sure on this one so i thought i would see if there was any experts out there that do. They also want card cut but surely this will just have burnt edges like the wood we engrave.
Any advice would be appreciated as well as possible settings for the card and lino if they can be done.

Thanks

Chris

Real Lino is made from linseed oil and wood dust so you should be okay - I would make sure it is real lino though as I'm not sure what the cheaper floor coverings are made of! I would doubt it would not take a lot of power to be honest as it's much like MDF made up of compressed particles.

Agree with card cutting - depending on the shape and quantity it may be cheaper to get them die cut. I had a similar enquiry where they wanted each sheet engraved to look branded. I said I would only do it in small batches and when I had nothing else on, not had a reply on that one yet :)

With enough clean air and the correct settings card can be cut without and edge burning, wether the smaller machines can do it or not I'm not sure.

Some modern floor coverings missnamed Linolium contain chlorides and the fumes are very toxic as well as corrosive, do the burn test on a tiny sample before even considering cutting it :)

best wishes
