I did it

My first reasonable result.

Haven't trimmed it particularly well but I think I am getting the hang of engraving.

Once I get better at getting rid of the background little Camerom will look a lot better. At the moment his ear looks nibbled and his hair a little bit dis-jointed. Trying to do a horse tonight with limited success as I forgot to take a note of light, dark, contrast etc so had to start from scratch. The first one I did tonight lacked contrast so I am currently trying for a second attempt.

Any tips on effective background removal other than the wand and rubber?

Thanks for the support and help as without you both I would have been really struggling.

What software Ali? I use a freehand selection tool, mask and layers to do it with the software I use.

I sit with photo shop and select with the magic wand then rub out the selection. Gets a bit tricky when tones are similar and the selection is a tad blurred, tend to use a wee rubber on these bits.

Using gimp to get a negative etc etc

Ooooh layers, my son tried to show me how to do these the other night. Once he had finished what he thought was a straight forward demonstration he turned round to find his Mum curled up in the corner sucking her thumb!!!!!!

LOL - this is a simple way of doing it with Gimp without layers ;-)

The same technique can most likely be used in other software too

Looking for an honest and open response.

Question: Would I benefit from getting PhotoGrav?

Can it do better than I am currently doing?

Thanks again

Glass is really horrible stuff to laser engrave at the best of times (and you have got a good result there) but Photograv is an excellent piece of kit for most subjects, not just photographic images.
I use a different software but a friend in the US, who has Photograv, converted a number of images for me to use for testing and comparison purposes and the results have got me thinking 'should I buy it'.
